A FREE Lead Safe Work Practice Training will be held on August 12th from 9 am to 5 pm. (The June 12th training has been postponed). Home renovation and remodeling in homes built before 1978 can create dangerous lead dust. If you work on homes or plan to do work on your own home, learn how to do it the lead safe way by attending this training. Furthermore, the EPA has just passed a law that will be phased in over the next two years that requires contractors working for pay in homes built before 1978 to take a Lead Safe Work Practice course. Register at leadsafetraining.org. or call CLEARCorps at 313-924-4000. |

Hardware Campaign Continues |
|
Last summer, CLEARCorps visited 72 hardware stores in Wayne and Oakland county to provide vital lead safe work practice information. Posters, brochures, and paint sticks with lead safe work tips were put out in almost every store for customers to take. As summer arrives again, and many people begin thinking about home renovations, CLEARCorps will continue its hardware store campaign. We will return to the stores to restock our displays. Additionally, CLEARCorps will use this campaign as an opportunity to educate contractors about a new EPA law that will require many of them to take a Lead Safe Work Practice Training course. If you know of a hardware store that would benefit from our educational materials, please email Mary Sue Schottenfels at mss@clearcorpsdetroit.org. |

The Cincinnati Lead Study followed a cohort of inner city children from their first or second trimester until their 20’s. The researchers found dose dependant effects of lead on brain size and criminal activity. Lead poisoning reduced brain size, especially in males, in areas that are important for attention, executive functions, complex motor control, and reward based decision making. Additionally, every 5 ug/dL increase in prenatal blood lead increased the number of arrests by 40% and violent arrests by 34%. Visit the PLoS Medicine website to read the article. |
