The CLEARCorps’ EPA funded Primary Prevention Program works to assure that newborns on Detroit’s eastside do not become lead poisoned. One strategy is to relocate mothers with infants to lead free homes. When meeting with a property manager for eastside tax credit housing, we were surprised to find that she was already familiar with our program. “CLEARCorps? Your program serviced my house!” She told us that when her first born son was a year old he was eating paint chips from their porch, resulting in a blood lead level of 37. She was devastated. CLEARCorps completed interim controls on her home and educated her about lead. Her son’s lead level dropped promptly. Now, at eight years old, he is performing and behaving well in school. It’s great to know we are making a difference! |

Summer is finally here. Time for fun and relaxation. But don’t let your clients and colleagues forget about protecting their children from lead. Rates of lead poisoning increase during the summer because people open and close their windows more often, creating lead dust from the paint on the windows. Also, children playing outside might be playing in dirt that contains lead. To reduce children’s lead exposure, make sure to wet mop often, have everyone take off their shoes at the door, and cover bare soil with grass or mulch. To receive education about proper cleaning techniques and lead prevention services, call CLEARCorps at 924-4000. Additionally, home renovation can create dangerously high lead dust levels that can easily poison a child. If you are planning to paint or remodel always wet surfaces before sanding or scraping old paint and call CLEARCorps at 924-4000 for more information about lead safe work practices. |
